Conociendo Brador

A “batey” is a village in which the male residents work the sugarcane plantations in exchange for meager wages as well as housing permissions for both themselves and their families. Traditionally, in the Dominican Republic, Haitian migrant workers would come to work the cane for 6 months and return home upon the close of the season. Eventually, these workers stayed in the off-season as well, bringing their families from Haiti or starting new ones where they were.

"Conociendo Brador" (Knowing Brador) is a collection of photos that gives insight into the life of the residents of Batey Brador, a village located in the El Seibo Province of the Dominican Republic. The people here live a simple life without many of the modern amenities of the West, such as electricity and indoor plumbing. Life in a batey is not easy, but the people are resilient, hard-working, and exemplify perseverance.
